How much is this Wallace Nutting print worth?
Wallace Nutting a favorite American Photographer
Darlene asks:
I have this piece that I need some help with and pretty much verification on it. I have a few other pieces that are in my private collection( meaning they are staying in the family that I would like some info on, but dont want to burden you with them all right away.) If you are willing, I will send those at a later date for your insiteful help.
This piece I am needing help with is an original Wallace Nutting hand colored photo. I verified the signature on the Nutting Library site..but would like to know the value of my photo..I know its on the original matte..but there is unfortunatly a cut on it, it in no way affects the signature and title of the photo, and some water damage also, but the hand colored photo itelf has great color, looks like it really hasnt seen light for a long time
There is a bit of color difference under the matte..slight at best considering the age of the photo, but will have to be double matted to frame and hang.. My photo’s are not the greatest, but any help you can give me will be most appreicated.
Thank you
Darlene
AW says: I’ve sold many Wallace Nutting prints throughout the years. There’s little doubt that yours is an original.
Your’s titled ‘Hawthorne’s Den’ reframed and matted would be valued at about $95.00 to $125.00 retail. About 30 to 40% more in the original frame w/ the original backing.
The scarcer Nutting’s are generally the interior scenes.
What many dealers and collectors may not know, is that a great many authentic Nutting’s will have different style signatures.
Wallace Nutting enjoyed the rarity of being famous in his own time, and because he sold so many of his hand colored prints, he had different people sign his name at the shop where they were hand colored. More evaluations of Nutting's prints can be found here.
Good luck with yours.
