How to make money in the Music Business
52Sing for your supper.
- There is a lot of competition in the music business after many of the same dollars that you are. Fortunately for you, most of them (even the ones with talent) don't know or follow the business basics it takes to ever develop well paying gigs on a regular basis.
- While this is true in many careers, it especially rings true w/ musicians because many times, there's some kind of monetary stigmata attached or more likely there is an ignorance and dis-interest in the business end of it.
- The way I see it is that you have two choices:
- Choice #1.) Hope that you hit the lottery by landing a great agent that helps you produce a no. #1 hit, you rocket to the top of the ionosphere and when you float back down, land on easy street. Excuse me...no.1 out of HOW many?
- It's at the this failure of such a rise, that many throw down the guitar & mic so to speak.
- When so many reach the realization that the above scenario is probably never going to happen, much of your competition drops out. Failing to see the value in choice #2.
- Choice #2.) Keep at your music skills as diligently as possible, while honoring them by becoming at least proficient enough in business to get gigs on your own. Do you have what it takes to talk to a club owner? Ya got a mouth? We know, or at least assume your ego is big enough. After all your going to be on stage in front of crowds. If you can't ask for your own paycheck maybe your in the wrong biz. Think about it.
- If you've thought about it and your still reading then we go to:
- Section A) of choice 2 which goes like this.
- -Do you have enough material to present a set(s).
- - If so, is what you've got entertaining enough?
- - Are you sure? Double check because a lot of GREAT musicians aren't that entertaining. Especially many new bands that don't do any or enough covers to get an unfamiliar crowd engaged with them. This is the kiss of death for so many starting bands and singers. There's a musical phenomenon that dictates that much music material, even by well known artists needs to GROW on an audience. So what do you have if not some REAL STRONG covers to offer. Is the crowd going to go ballistic right off the bat for all of your original material? Again we run into the lottery scenario. Nuthin' wrong with that, as long as you don't mind starving until the masses are enlightened enough to visit you with sell-out halls.
- More likely is the opportunity to make good money playing strong familiar crowd pleasers with your own gems filtered in until they realize your brilliance. Then, the only covers you'll do will be mockeries of pop has-beens or Southern Gospel that you've punked out.
- So you have to ask yourself is it more important to be famous? Or is it more important to gig out?
- And of course, as we know how life works, your chances now getting the perks of choice #1 are much better with choice #2.

NO my friend, it means more for YOU, I'm one of the putzes who've dropped out! But I do what I love with my own business, (auctions & antiques) and do still play for my own enjoyment.
But I know how to market, and I took some of the principles I've learned in my 25 years of the auction business and applied it to this music article.
I'm glad that it's working out for your, I've got a 16 year old son who I'm trying to convince that his Bass playing is the best career option he has!:)LOL, but I may be biased because I'm always looking for him to back up my shoddy guitar playing!
Thanks for the comment and BTW, what kind of music are you playing out these days?
Peace,
AW
Everything you said is very true but I do question the covers. My gorup for instance, will be starting off playing the smallest of the small clubs, partys, halls , etc. but with all originals. now If we play in fornt of 20 ppl and a few like us, they will tell their friends and so on. Eventually we will have a nice following and have opportunities to play bigger clubs maybe even opening up for bigger acts. I dont see where we would need to play covers. I know for my self, Ive seen bands play and I was digging their originals and when they played covers I was disappointed because I dont find talent in copying other peoples music. I know many people who feel the same way. Am I right in thinking this way?
I specialize in marketing and promotion, after numerous & extensive searches for items I need right away, I've found Amazon's prices almost always impossib
